SIS Drives with SMI Interface Power Blinds in a Modern Library Building in France
450 SIS motors by SELVE ensure the perfect drive.

Where people research, read, or borrow items, and where events and exhibitions take place, floor-to-ceiling glass elements demand a reliable privacy and sun protection system. Since opening to the public a year and a half ago, the light-flooded interiors of the "Médiathèque de Rillieux-La-Pape" have relied on the robust performance of motors "Made in Lüdenscheid" for raising and lowering the blinds. For this reference project located in the northeast outskirts of Lyon, Soliso Europe was responsible for the sun protection. The company produced and installed anodized aluminum blinds of various sizes and once again awarded the contract to SELVE’s drive technology.
Soliso has been a loyal SELVE customer for over a decade, supported locally in France by SELVE Area Manager Jean-Philippe Bletterer. “As a sun protection specialist, Soliso enjoys a stellar reputation for producing tailor-made blinds and Venetian blinds for commercial projects,” Bletterer explains. For motorizing precise sun protection, the Nantes-based company has long relied on SELVE, using not only SP motors but primarily SIS drives with the Standard Motor Interface (SMI) – a uniform, cross-manufacturer motor interface for building technology. “Particularly in large office complexes and commercial buildings, SIS motors are a critical and reliable solution,” Bletterer adds. “Their intelligent integration enables the step towards digital sun protection and their incorporation into complex building control systems.”
Precision Movement
450 SIS blind motors are in use at many glass elements across several building levels of the Rillieux-La-Pape library. They operate automatically depending on the time of day and light incidence and can also be manually controlled via SELVE wireless transmitters. The SIS is suitable for all systems integrated into a bus system. Thanks to its integrated SMI technology, it enables bidirectional data exchange and precise control of the sun protection system. Additionally, SELVE's motor offers “several other product advantages,” emphasizes the French sales representative. “Our SIS can be easily installed with its plug-in system, is suitable for blinds in 25mm headrails, and has a compact length of just 127 mm.” Features include overload protection in both upward and downward directions, adjustable motor speed, reduced speed during starting and stopping, and automatic slat adjustment.
“All these features make the SIS a preferred choice for many other Soliso projects as well,” says Jean-Philippe Bletterer. The integrated SMI technology of these wired motors enables modern applications: the blinds in the "Médiathèque" can be operated with high positional accuracy. “The key benefit lies in their interaction with intelligent building controls,” adds Dirk Wrobel, SELVE's product manager for sun protection. This includes synchronized operation of blinds in parallel, uniform positioning of slats, feedback from the motors on command execution, and flexible parameterization.
SELVE's Technical Support
For the modern library building, it was essential to motorize the horizontally segmented glazing on various facade sides according to the specifications. Based on a facade plan, Dirk Wrobel provided technical support for Soliso during the project planning. He created a detailed execution plan specifying which components, in addition to the drives, needed to be installed and where, to implement the desired group and subgroup control of the blinds. He determined the exact number of so-called Terminal Boxes and Switch Boxes for connecting the motors. “These control devices, developed specifically for the SIS, allow for a daisy-chained arrangement,” Wrobel explains. commeo Control wireless receivers were used to realize centralized control for the respective groups.
The "Médiathèque de Rillieux-La-Pape" demonstrates that the "SIS has everything that makes it a successful drive for interior applications," stresses SELVE's product manager. The motor has proven itself in practice in a wide range of both large and small projects over many years. “Whether used digitally via SMI technology or conventionally with standard shutter switches: the SIS is the first choice for motorizing interior sun protection for a growing number of professional customers because it meets high standards for precision, parallel operation, and digital communication,” Dirk Wrobel concludes.
